The qualifying battle was incredibly tight throughout the afternoon, with Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton trading blows through the first two sessions. The seven-time world champion actually had the upper hand in Q1 and Q2, but when it mattered in Q3, Verstappen found that extra bit of pace while Hamilton appeared to struggle more with the Ferrari's character. It was the kind of margin you find at Singapore, where hundredths of a second separate pole from third place, and Verstappen just managed to edge it when it counted.

Speaking after securing pole, Verstappen was delighted with how the car performed all weekend. He acknowledged that the new regulations have changed how the car behaves through different parts of the corners compared to previous years, but he's clearly found the sweet spot around Marina Bay. When asked about his terrible start in the sprint race, where he called his launch off the line horrendous, Verstappen took an optimistic view. He reckoned things can only improve come Sunday and that Red Bull would be working on sorting out whatever caused the issue in the sprint.

Historically, Red Bull haven't been at their absolute best around this street circuit, making his ability to control qualifying and the sprint race all the more impressive. With pole secured and momentum building, Verstappen will be eyeing up that grand prix victory on Sunday to cap off what's been a strong weekend at Marina Bay.
