Verstappen Steals Singapore Sprint Victory After Russell's Costly Error in Wet Chaos

Max Verstappen took the honours in a wet and wild Singapore sprint that saw chaos unfold from start to finish. A monsoon downpour delayed the race by 30 minutes, but once the lights went out, George Russell made a brilliant start to leap ahead of pole-sitter Verstappen. The Mercedes driver's lead lasted just one lap though, as he lost the back end at the final corner exit and brought out the safety car. From there, Verstappen inherited the lead and never looked back, eventually cruising to victory whilst the drama spiralled behind him.

Lewis Hamilton's strong drive from 6th on the grid earned him second place for Ferrari, keeping pace with the champion early on before gradually losing contact as Verstappen pulled away. Charles Leclerc salvaged third spot for the Scuderia after finding himself nowhere near the front for large stretches of the race. It was a bit of a damage limitation job for Ferrari, but at least they scored a double podium finish from a sprint that proved absolutely brutal for multiple teams.

The retirements column tells you everything about just how treacherous conditions were out there. Nine drivers hit the wall, crashed, or suffered mechanical failures during the 20-lap sprint. Valtteri Bottas misjudged his braking under the safety car and smashed into Alex Albon, who then collided with Gabriel Bortoleto. Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez tangled and both limped back to the pits. It was pure carnage in the wet.

The McLarens were poised to pick up a tidy haul of points with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris running 4th and 5th, but disaster struck on the final lap when they collided and both spun out. Piastri was done for the day, whilst Norris managed to nurse his car across the line in 8th. That handed Kimi Antonelli, Liam Lawson, and Oliver Bearman the chance to grab higher finishes, with Bearman's Haas securing 6th place.

Pierre Gasly had his afternoon made tougher when Nico Hülkenberg forced him off track at turn one, an incident that drew no penalty despite looking pretty aggressive. The German picked up 7th and points, whilst Gasly clawed his way back to 9th. Esteban Ocon finished 10th but missed out on sprint points as only the top eight scored in this one. Qualifying looms next, though it'll likely face a delay to meet the mandatory three-hour gap rules.
