Norris' Desperate Lunge at Piastri Costs McLaren Big Points in Singapore Sprint

What a mess for McLaren at the Singapore Sprint. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collided on the final lap when Norris tried an ambitious move down the inside of his teammate, sliding into him and taking both cars out of contention. Norris managed to limp home in P8 for a single point, but it was an absolute disaster for the team's strategy when they were looking at a solid double points finish with Max Verstappen taking the win.

Martin Brundle didn't hold back in his analysis, spotting exactly what went wrong. He reckoned Norris caught the kerb on the inside of the corner as the track pinched, which slid him even further into Oscar's side. The Sky Sports pundit was pretty clear that it wasn't worth the risk for a position swap in a sprint race. He noted that while Piastri might've left a bit more space, he could've hit the wall on the outside if he'd done so. The bottom line was simple, Brundle said, just not worth it.

Jenson Button came down even harder on Norris, calling him bullish and noting he was taking a hell of a lunge on his own teammate at that stage of the race. Button pointed out that the corner tightens significantly at the apex, which is exactly why Norris found himself sliding into Oscar. Karun Chandhok joined in too, labeling it a risk too far for what should've been an easier points haul.

Interestingly, Norris wasn't entirely convinced he'd done wrong. When he spoke to Sky Sports after the incident, he insisted he had the line and wouldn't have gone for it otherwise. He apologized that one car ended up out but suggested a review of the footage was needed. It's the kind of thing that'll probably get picked apart in the McLaren debrief, especially with Zak Brown watching his two cars take each other out and throw away valuable points in the championship fight.
