Russell Tops Singapore FP1 as Mercedes Prepares from Back of Grid

George Russell has stamped his authority on free practice ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, clocking the fastest time of the sole practice session at Marina Bay. The Mercedes driver posted a 1m 32.274s to edge out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by just 0.198 seconds, with McLaren's Lando Norris rounding out the top three less than three tenths behind. It's a solid start for Russell, though the Brit will be starting Sunday's race from the back of the grid after power unit changes, so every bit of track time counts this Friday.

The single hour of practice played out under dusty, sub-optimal conditions as the sun dipped low over Marina Bay, with drivers and teams immediately getting stuck in at the demanding street circuit. Russell reported that his car felt stiff as Mercedes got to grips with the bumpy asphalt, while Lance Stroll's Aston Martin and Norris both took excursions into the run-off areas early on. By the time track conditions had improved marginally, Lando had carved out a 1m 34.367s, but it wouldn't be enough to challenge the men ahead.

The practice session had its share of drama, particularly when Nico Hulkenberg's Audi ground to a halt with what the German driver described as something bad happening on the gearbox. A brief Virtual Safety Car was deployed with less than 20 minutes remaining as his car was rolled back to the pits. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli impressed with a 1m 33.830s at one point, showing Mercedes' strength across the garage alongside Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth just 0.499s adrift.

Russell's final lap on soft tyres proved decisive, as he powered clear of the field inside the final five minutes with the 1m 32.274s that no one could touch. Hamilton had earlier gone quickest with a 1m 32.821s, but his teammate had other ideas. Max Verstappen rounded out the top six, interestingly setting his best time on the medium tyre, while Oscar Piastri was fifth. With Sprint Qualifying to come later on Friday, the pack's clearly tight, and Russell's early pace suggests Mercedes might have a weapon even if he's starting from the pit lane come Sunday.
