Verstappen Nails Singapore Sprint Pole as Mercedes Split Strategy Pays Off for Russell

Max Verstappen has absolutely dominated Sprint Qualifying at Marina Bay, securing pole position for the sprint race with a blistering lap that left everyone else scratching their heads. The Red Bull driver delivered when it mattered most, especially impressive given that neither he nor teammate Isack Hadjar ran the soft compound in Friday practice, meaning they went into SQ3 with limited data on how the car would perform on that tyre. Once Verstappen switched to the softs, it was game over. He grabbed pole by more than a tenth and immediately showed why Red Bull have been on such a roll lately, even at a track traditionally unkind to their machinery.

There was a bit of drama when the stewards called Verstappen in to explain an overtaking manoeuvre on Lewis Hamilton under yellow flags during SQ1, but after reviewing the incident they found nothing to penalize him for. Meanwhile, it was a tougher day for Hadjar, who failed to set a time in SQ3 after running wide and losing his lap to track limits. The Frenchman had felt comfortable early on but struggled when the softs came out, finding the car tricky to handle despite the extra grip feeling promising at first.

Mercedes came away with a second place finish through George Russell, who looked consistently rapid throughout the day and only just missed out to Verstappen's pole effort. Russell was running the older spec package and it clearly suited him, allowing him to extract strong performance and maintain a good car balance. However, teammate Kimi Antonelli had a much tougher session on the newer upgrade package, ending up seventh and over half a second adrift. Antonelli admitted he struggled to find rhythm from the opening practice session onwards, though Mercedes believe there's plenty to gain overnight with the data they've gathered.

The gap at the front shows just how tight things are in 2026, with only fractions separating drivers at a venue like Singapore where conditions and track nuances can swing momentum dramatically. Russell acknowledged that Verstappen was quick but expressed satisfaction with Mercedes' position heading into Saturday's sprint, noting that pole position's side of the track typically enjoys a grip advantage. For Verstappen and Red Bull, it's been an impressive bounce-back at a circuit where they've historically found things difficult, giving them real momentum heading into the main qualifying session and race.
