Verstappen Nabs Singapore Sprint Pole as Hamilton Investigation Looms

Max Verstappen has grabbed pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix Sprint, but his evening under the Marina Bay lights came with a cloud hanging over it. Lewis Hamilton has reported the Red Bull driver for a yellow flag infringement during their in-laps, which means Verstappen could be heading to the stewards after the session wraps. George Russell secured second on the front row ahead of Charles Leclerc, setting up an intriguing battle for tomorrow's short race.

The Sprint qualifying session got properly chaotic when Sergio Perez binned it at Turn 4 early on, spewing debris everywhere and forcing the stewards to throw up a red flag. With only five drivers able to set lap times before that red flag stoppage, the session had a mad scramble once it resumed. Verstappen managed to top SQ1 ahead of Hamilton and Leclerc, while Lance Stroll and several others found themselves heading home early.

SQ2 brought its own drama when a timing board malfunction nearly caught out Gabriel Bortoleto, but the Brazilian's time eventually registered and he made it through. Russell looked like he might be in trouble after locking up and running out of pace, but the Mercedes driver delivered when it mattered on his final effort. Meanwhile, McLaren appear to have solved Lando Norris' recent engine troubles, with the Australian driver showing sharp pace before Leclerc edged him out.

Leclerc looked like he'd nailed pole when he set the best time in SQ3, but Verstappen had other ideas. With just three minutes on the clock, the Dutchman lit up the timing screens and put two tenths between himself and the Ferrari driver. Russell grabbed second spot ahead of Leclerc, while the McLaren pair of Norris and Oscar Piastri couldn't quite find an answer to Verstappen's pace. The question now is whether that investigation into Hamilton's incident will change the grid, or whether Verstappen's performance will stand.
