Palmer Slams Hamilton and Ferrari for 'Sloppy' Mistakes Costing Them in 2026 Title Fight

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari are throwing away a golden opportunity to challenge Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 championship, according to former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer. Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Palmer reckons the Scuderia have been handed chances on a silver platter thanks to Mercedes' reliability troubles, but they're squandering them through careless errors. With the grid heading to Zandvoort this weekend for the final time, Hamilton sits second in the drivers' standings, 50 points behind Antonelli, while Ferrari trails Mercedes by 72 points in the constructors' battle.

Palmer pinpointed several unforced errors that've cost Hamilton and Ferrari crucial points in recent races. There was the impeding penalty in Hungary when Hamilton held up Oscar Piastri during qualifying, dropping him three places, plus a five-second pit lane speeding penalty in the same race. Then there was the jump start at Silverstone because Hamilton moved his hand too quickly off the steering wheel. These aren't mistakes born from poor driving, Palmer stressed, but rather lapses in concentration from the driver and his race engineer that feel particularly frustrating given the circumstances.

What makes these slip-ups even more annoying is just how brilliantly Hamilton's been driving overall. After a nightmare first year at Ferrari in 2025 where he failed to score a single podium in his 19-year F1 career, the seven-time world champion has orchestrated an incredible turnaround under the new regulations. He's matching and often outpacing teammate Charles Leclerc, who sits fourth, 31 points behind, while sitting just nine points clear of George Russell. Palmer's full of praise for Hamilton's performance level, calling it some of the best he's ever done.

The irony is brutal though. Hamilton's clearly got the speed to mount a genuine title challenge, but Ferrari need every single point if they're going to catch Antonelli. These silly mistakes are robbing them of momentum and taking the pressure off the championship leader. Palmer wrapped up by saying that if Ferrari want to win this thing, they absolutely have to tighten up their game. They're already playing catch-up with Mercedes, so handing points away through careless penalties is the last thing they can afford right now.
