Max Verstappen has opened up about the absolutely wild journey he's had since joining Formula 1 back in 2015 as a teenager. Red Bull fast-tracked the then-17-year-old prodigy straight to Toro Rosso, and after just one season, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko took the gamble to promote him to the senior team in 2016, replacing Daniil Kvyat. Not everyone was convinced at the time, with Horner even questioning the call and Carlos Sainz apparently miffed that he missed out on the seat. Turns out it was a brilliant decision, because Verstappen absolutely smashed it right from the start.

The Dutchman won on his maiden F1 appearance at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, setting the stage for what would become one of the greatest careers in motorsport history. He's now a four-time world champion, claiming titles consecutively from 2021 through 2024, setting record after record along the way. His 2022 and 2023 seasons were absolutely dominant, though the recent years have seen him face stiff competition from rivals like Lando Norris.

Speaking to Formule1.nl recently, Verstappen reflected on just how unexpected his success has been, even to himself. 'When I entered Formula 1, I didn't think it would all turn out so well,' he admitted. 'Nobody did, I think.' The 28-year-old went on to discuss his plans for legacy projects outside of racing, including his GT racing program and his own racing team, Verstappen Racing. He's clearly thinking about what comes next, especially with his final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort potentially on the horizon. That emotional home race has always been special for him, and he never anticipated the massive fan reaction it generates.
