George Russell's Title Dream Has Gone Completely Pear Shaped, and David Croft Knows It

Back before the 2026 season kicked off, Sky Sports commentator David Croft made a bold prediction. He tipped George Russell as the favourite to win the Formula 1 championship, reckoning the Mercedes driver had what it takes to handle the pressure and lead the charge with the new regulations. The W17 looked absolutely rapid in pre-season testing, and when Russell took the Australian Grand Prix victory, everything seemed to be unfolding exactly as Croft had imagined. Rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli was struggling through his first year, the car was quick, and Russell had the experience to capitalize. It all looked like a sure thing.

Fast forward to August and that prediction is looking absolutely ridiculous. Antonelli is absolutely demolishing Russell in the standings, currently sitting 50 points clear at the top while his more experienced teammate has slumped to third, 59 points adrift. Russell's managed just one win since that opening race in Australia and five podiums total, which frankly isn't getting the job done when your rookie partner is storming toward a title. The mechanical gremlins haven't helped his cause either, with reliability issues eating into his season. But here's the thing, it's not just bad luck that's holding Russell back. Antonelli has simply been faster in qualifying and on race day, and he's somehow avoided the same technical troubles.

The situation got particularly messy in Hungary where Russell finished seventh after stalling on the grid, while Antonelli brought the car home in third. Critics started pointing out that Russell seemed to be driving way too cautiously, like he was too worried about protecting his reputation rather than pushing for the championship. That's when you know things have gotten genuinely difficult. The pressure of fighting for a title, especially against your own teammate who's younger and seemingly hungrier, appears to be getting into his head. Russell himself reckons the gods aren't on his side, but the performance gap tells a different story.

Guenther Steiner didn't mince words either, suggesting Russell's driving like he's in a Cadillac compared to the pace Antonelli's extracting from the same machinery. That's a brutal assessment, but it's hard to argue with the results on track. Croft's prediction of Russell winning the title and beating out Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Charles Leclerc is aging like milk left out in the summer heat. Instead of his top eight materializing, Ferrari's surging, Mercedes' internal battle has become completely lopsided, and the whole championship picture looks nothing like anyone expected.
