Mercedes Told Kimi Antonelli to Back Off Max Verstappen at Malaysia

Kimi Antonelli had Max Verstappen right where he wanted him during the Malaysian Grand Prix, but his own team wouldn't let him go for it. The Mercedes driver finished second at Sepang, behind the Red Bull driver's impressive victory in what turned out to be a properly chaotic race. Multiple cars ground to a halt during the formation lap thanks to a software glitch, but once racing finally got underway, Antonelli made an aggressive start and actually led the charge ahead of Verstappen. That didn't last long though, as the championship leader soon found his way through and took control of the race.

The radio messages that came out afterwards tell the real story. During one of the two safety car periods, Antonelli's race engineer Peter Bonnington reminded him exactly what they were there to do. Bonnington came on the radio with some clear instructions: check out the Ferraris ahead of you in fifth and sixth, that's what we're focusing on. He also gave Antonelli a friendly warning about track limits, noting they already had two strikes and couldn't afford any more penalties. But Antonelli wasn't having it. He fired back that he was fighting Verstappen as well, not just the red machines.

That's when the team put their foot down properly. Bonnington's response was pretty blunt, telling the 19-year-old that Verstappen wasn't part of the bigger championship picture right now. Mercedes weren't about to risk anything with teammate George Russell already out of the race after a power unit failure with just five laps remaining. So they reined him in, prioritized the championship lead, and told Antonelli to think long-term. It's the classic calculated approach, but you can sense the frustration in a young driver who genuinely had a shot at taking down the championship leader.

The strategy worked out for Mercedes in the end. Antonelli extended his championship lead to 84 points over Verstappen, who still has seven races to mount a comeback. Russell's retirement hurt the team strategically, which only reinforced why they wanted Antonelli playing it safe rather than going all out against the Red Bull. Sometimes championships are won by keeping your powder dry rather than going for glory on the day.
