Norris Takes Back-to-Back Poles at Zandvoort as McLaren Fixes Sprint Woes

Lando Norris has done it again, grabbing pole position for the second consecutive Grand Prix after a masterclass in Qualifying at Zandvoort. The McLaren driver was absolutely on it when it mattered, throwing caution to the wind on his final lap to secure a commanding 1:11.163. He was fully committed out there, pushing hard and taking risks that paid off in spades, giving his team the best possible starting spot for Sunday's race.

It wasn't all smooth sailing on Saturday though. During the Sprint, Norris found himself struggling with rear grip as his medium tyres started to fade, allowing Charles Leclerc to sweep past him. Oscar Piastri, his McLaren teammate, had a tougher day, dropping behind a rapid Alessandro Antonelli early on before settling into a lonely fifth place finish. But here's where McLaren's engineering did the business. Between the Sprint and Qualifying, the team made some clever adjustments targeting low-speed corners and reducing the load on the rear axle, and Norris absolutely benefited from those tweaks.

Piastri finished Qualifying in fourth, just 0.142 seconds behind his mate. The Australian felt the car was working well and that the team's making real progress, but admitted he couldn't quite extract the same pace as Norris when it mattered most. Team Principal Andrea Stella reckoned it was a solid day overall, confirming the form they've shown since Budapest while pulling learnings from the Sprint's tyre degradation issues.

Norris himself sounded cautiously optimistic about Sunday but realistic about the challenge ahead. He knows Mercedes and Ferrari are going to be breathing down his neck, and he's not expecting the same level of control he had in Hungary. Still, starting from pole with clean air ahead is exactly what you want, and the McLaren driver plans to work overtime with his engineers to shore up any weaknesses before the main event. It's going to be a proper battle come race day.

George Russell claimed the Sprint victory, managing his tyres brilliantly to win unchallenged and start eating into his teammate's championship lead. Antonelli showed impressive pace from fifth on the grid, even with traffic to deal with, which suggests Mercedes and the rest of the field are keeping pressure on Norris and McLaren heading into the Grand Prix proper.
