Piastri Breaks Verstappen's Record at Zandvoort Despite Qualifying Fourth

Oscar Piastri's already had a stellar 2026 season, but the McLaren driver just added another feather to his cap at the Dutch Grand Prix. Even though he'll start from fourth on the grid at Zandvoort, qualifying fourth doesn't sound like record-breaking stuff, right? Well, it just became the moment Piastri edged out Max Verstappen for one of the sport's most impressive consistency records.

Here's the thing: Piastri reached Q3 for the 74th time in his Formula 1 career. With that effort during Saturday's session, he's now officially broken Verstappen's record for the highest Q3 appearance rate in F1 history. Piastri's now sitting at an astonishing 90.24% of all race weekends where he's made it into the final 12-minute shootout. That's slightly ahead of Verstappen's 90.20% across his 245 race entries. It's a genuinely impressive stat that shows just how consistently rapid the 25-year-old has been on single laps.

Lewis Hamilton rounds out the podium for this particular record, checking in at 89.80% with 352 Q3 appearances out of 392 entries. Behind them sits Lando Norris, Piastri's McLaren teammate who just grabbed pole position ahead of George Russell of Mercedes, with 85.37%. Charles Leclerc completes the top five at 83.24%, which isn't shabby considering his reputation for one-lap pace and his tally of 27 pole positions.

The irony isn't lost on anyone that Piastri's beaten this particular Verstappen record at the Red Bull driver's final home Grand Prix for the foreseeable future. Verstappen managed to squeeze into Q3 himself on Saturday to secure seventh on the grid. Still, Piastri's fewer total race entries work in his favor here. It's worth noting the three-part knockout qualifying format only started in 2006, so comparing these stats across eras is tricky. But what's undeniable is that Piastri's consistency on qualifying days has been absolutely world-class throughout his career so far.
