McLaren Ends Dutch GP Era with Norris Victory as Zandvoort Bows Out

Lando Norris capped off the final chapter of Formula 1 at Zandvoort in stunning fashion, taking the chequered flag ahead of the competition to secure back-to-back wins following his triumph in Hungary. The McLaren driver converted pole position into a comfortable victory, winning by 11 seconds in wet and challenging conditions that saw early drama unfold. This marks McLaren's hat-trick of Dutch Grand Prix victories across the last three years, with the Woking team signing off from the iconic circuit in style.

The race was absolute chaos right from the opening laps. A heavy shower caught everyone out before the start, leaving the track slick and treacherous. Max Verstappen's day ended in the first lap after a big crash at the high-speed final corner, triggering a red flag restart. When racing resumed, Andrea Kimi Antonelli briefly muscled past Lando for the lead, but the McLaren driver stayed composed and kept the pressure on through a complex pit stop strategy involving multiple tyre compounds. Oscar Piastri struggled with consistency despite strong early pace, finishing in sixth after a frustrating afternoon that included a slow stop and being passed by both Ferrari drivers.

The strategy battle defined the afternoon as drivers ran a mix of soft and hard compound tyres depending on when they pitted. Lando initially ran softs before switching to hard rubber, which proved the winning move. After Antonelli tried an undercut gambit on lap 40, Norris stayed out longer and built a decisive tyre advantage. He caught and passed the Ferrari driver on lap 53, then went after Lewis Hamilton for the lead shortly after. A late-race virtual safety car briefly threatened his advantage, but he had enough breathing room to manage home comfortably.

Piastri's race was hampered early when he pitted on lap 18 trying to avoid an undercut, only to suffer a sluggish stop that left him behind George Russell and vulnerable to the Ferraris. Despite finding a good rhythm towards the end, including a couple of softer-tyre stints following the VSC on lap 55, he couldn't climb back through the order. McLaren remains focused and measured despite the strong result, stressing the importance of continued development on the MCL40 as rivals keep pushing upgrades in this new formula.
