Verstappen Crashes in Opening Lap Drama as Antonelli Leads Dutch GP Restart

It's been an absolute wild one at Zandvoort. Max Verstappen has crashed on the first lap of his home Dutch Grand Prix, and it's caused enough damage to bring out the red flags. The race has been suspended with debris scattered across the track, meaning the drivers are heading back to the pits for a restart. Rain had already made things tricky in the hour before the start, and now this has thrown everything into chaos at what's being billed as the final Dutch Grand Prix on the F1 calendar.

When the race does get going again, the grid's been reshuffled. Kimi Antonelli has got himself into the lead, absolutely nailing the first corner to beat pole-sitter Lando Norris and jump from second into the front. Oscar Piastri has made up serious ground too, jumping from fourth on the grid to third place thanks to a brilliant start and a stunning move up the inside on George Russell at turn seven. Piastri's made the interesting call to stay on the hard tyres while everyone else around him is on softs or mediums.

Here's where it gets tactical. McLaren have gone full opposite strategies with their two drivers. Norris has switched to the soft compound, desperate for the grip you need after a restart. Piastri, meanwhile, is sticking with the hards and playing the long game, trying to gain track position and stretch out his first stint so he can pit later than his rivals. Charles Leclerc is currently running fifth on soft tyres and looking genuinely quick, though he's stuck behind Russell and doesn't seem to be backing off the pace at all.

The restart's shown some early drama too. Oliver Bearman's already out of it with a total engine failure before the race even properly got going again, and a couple of penalties have been handed out for overtaking under double-yellow flags. George Russell's sitting third but faces pressure from all directions as the race tries to get into any sort of rhythm. This one's far from over, and with Antonelli leading the championship, this is shaping up to be a proper scrap.
