Formula 1 is back in Madrid for the first time since 1981, and the new Madring circuit has already made an impression. George Russell set the pace in the inaugural free practice session at the Spanish capital's fresh venue, clocking a best time of 1:34.077 to lead the charge. It's Mercedes making an early statement at a track that's proving challenging for the entire grid with its 22 tight corners and walls that give you absolutely no room for error.

Russell's teammate Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, finished just 0.286 seconds behind to complete a Mercedes one-two. The pair had to work through the session like everyone else, getting a feel for a 3.364-mile circuit that's located about 20 minutes outside Madrid's city centre. Antonelli actually led early on with a near eight-tenths advantage over Max Verstappen, but Russell's superior pace with clean air ultimately prevailed when it mattered.

Charles Leclerc grabbed third place in the closing stages, edging out his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton who settled for fourth. Leclerc's late push on the softer compound rubber showed Ferrari's potential here, though they've got some work to do if they want to challenge Mercedes' current dominance. Verstappen rounded out the top five, already complaining about rear tyre load on his Red Bull.

The session wasn't without drama. Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda's day ended early with a power steering failure, a frustrating moment for someone still acclimatising to the new generation cars. There was also plenty of traffic causing headaches for drivers chasing quick laps, with Arvid Lindblad particularly vocal about getting held up at turn 12. Russell himself copped the same treatment before finally piecing together a clean lap to steal the top spot.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri gave McLaren some decent data at sixth and eighth respectively, while the rest of the grid is clearly still getting to grips with this demanding new circuit. The Madring's proximity to the barriers means every lap counts as drivers build confidence. With qualifying and the race still to come, expect the times to tumble as everyone settles into this exciting new Spanish venue.
