Lewis Hamilton Reveals Fernando Alonso Vetoed His Ferrari Move Years Ago

Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season might've happened way earlier if things had gone differently back in the day. The seven-time world champion has now revealed that Fernando Alonso actually blocked an earlier switch to Maranello when the Spanish driver held significant power at the Scuderia. Hamilton was chatting with Sky Sports ahead of the Italian Grand Prix and opened up about what could've been a proper bombshell signing.

Here's the thing, back when Stefano Domenicali was running Ferrari as team principal between 2008 and 2014, he'd actually explored bringing Hamilton in as Alonso's teammate. But Alonso had veto rights and was the number one driver at Ferrari, so he wasn't having any of it. Hamilton explained the situation pretty straightforwardly, saying the stars just never aligned for them to reunite at the Prancing Horse. Alonso clearly wasn't keen on reliving what happened at McLaren in 2007.
That 2007 season at McLaren was absolutely mental. Hamilton was a rookie going up against the defending two-time world champion in Alonso, yet the young Brit was matching him for wins and points. The whole thing turned toxic, with controversial moments flying left and right, and Alonso bailed after just one season. So yeah, you can understand why he'd want to avoid round two as teammates somewhere else.

While Alonso stayed put at Ferrari until 2014, Hamilton had already moved on to Mercedes by then and absolutely dominated. He collected six more world championships with the Silver Arrows to add to his first one, bringing his total to seven. Alonso's career took a different route, returning to McLaren in 2015 for their Honda nightmare years before eventually calling it a day in 2018. He made his comeback with Alpine in 2021 and then switched to Aston Martin in 2023, where he's still hunting for that elusive eighth victory.

Fast forward to now and Hamilton finally got his Ferrari shot in 2025. He's deep into his second season at the Italian team and chasing world title number eight, though things have been pretty spicy lately with teammate Charles Leclerc. Funny how the universe works, innit? A Ferrari move that Alonso blocked over a decade ago finally happened anyway, just without Fernando in the picture.
