It's exactly the kind of start Russell needed, especially with his championship hopes needing a serious boost this weekend. A strong showing at the all-new layout could be exactly what the defending team needs to climb back into contention.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the top four for Ferrari, continuing the Scuderia's solid form after their recent Monza heroics. Hamilton, however, found himself at the center of some controversy during the session, getting accused of blocking on three separate occasions. The irony didn't escape anyone, though, as Hamilton also caught the sharp end of traffic management himself at least twice during the hour. With the Madring's 22-corner design creating genuine bottlenecks, blocking incidents seem destined to plague the entire weekend.

Max Verstappen finished fifth for Red Bull, ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris and a gaggle of midfield runners. Arvid Lindblad put the Racing Bulls into seventh, with Oscar Piastri in eighth. Nico Hulkenberg and Liam Lawson completed the top ten, showing the field is bunched up tightly across the grid. It's an encouraging sign for competitive racing at a circuit nobody's properly raced on before.
