Red Bull Throws Five-Year Contract at Max Verstappen as Contract Saga Heats Up

Red Bull's getting desperate. With Max Verstappen's future still up in the air heading into the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, the team's reportedly tabling a massive five-year contract offer to keep their four-time world champion locked in until 2033. That's a proper show of faith from Milton Keynes, but here's the thing: Verstappen doesn't seem that keen on it. According to reports from F1-Insider, the Dutch driver's got other ideas entirely.

The whole situation's a bit of a mess, to be honest. Verstappen's currently got an exit clause in his contract because he's not in the top two of the standings at the halfway point, meaning he can bail by October if he wants. Red Bull even tried bribing him with an eight million euro offer to scrap that exit clause, but his management wasn't having it. Now they're dangling this five-year deal in front of him, but Verstappen's apparently not interested in locking himself in for that long.

What Verstappen actually wants is way more modest. He'd rather sign just a one-year extension to stick around for 2027 and see if Red Bull's new design crew can finally build him a competitive car. The RB22's been described as undriveable this season, and the lad's understandably frustrated. If Red Bull can't deliver the goods next year, he's keeping his options open to either find a new team or potentially walk away from F1 altogether.

The drama doesn't end there either. McLaren are supposedly happy with their driver lineup, and Mercedes reckon they don't need Verstappen thanks to Kimi Antonelli's incredible form this year. But Ferrari could become a wild card option down the line. Charles Leclerc's locked in long-term, but Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes contract runs only through 2027, so things could shuffle around. Verstappen's clearly playing the long game here, waiting to see what opportunities pop up before committing to anything serious.

For now, Verstappen's keeping his cards close to his chest. He's told media there's nothing to report on his future and he's just focused on extracting whatever performance he can from this tricky machinery. Red Bull's throwing everything at keeping him happy, but it seems like the ball's in Max's court, and he's not ready to make any big decisions just yet.
