McLaren Battle Through Singapore Heat as Norris and Piastri Claw Back Points

McLaren wrapped up a gruelling triple-header at Singapore with both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri bringing home decent points after finishing fourth and fifth respectively. It wasn't the most thrilling race from the team's perspective, but they managed to gain a position each from their starting grid slots, which felt like a proper achievement given how tough the car was to drive in the sweltering conditions around Marina Bay.

The early phases were pretty static, with Norris and Piastri holding P5 and P6 as the front six drivers ran together in a bit of a stalemate. The McLaren pair started on Softs like Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, while Lewis Hamilton opted for the Medium compound. When Hamilton pitted first on Lap 18, he was already struggling, which gave Lando and Oscar the confidence to stretch their opening stints longer. They were betting on a Safety Car to help them minimise the damage when they finally stopped, but the pit sequence didn't play out in their favour.

After switching to Mediums on Laps 32 and 33, both drivers had decent pace to attack, but a Virtual Safety Car on Lap 39 handed Leclerc and Antonelli free pit stops that threw their strategy plans in the bin. Piastri's afternoon went downhill when he picked up a slow puncture on the front right, forcing an extra stop that basically ended his hopes of climbing higher. Norris, meanwhile, found himself caught up in a proper scrap with Hamilton and Antonelli, with the three of them compressing into a battle for position nine laps from the end.

Things got spicy when Lando attempted to pass Hamilton at Turn 1 on Lap 54, but both drivers ran wide and Antonelli nipped through to take P3. Lando followed him through a lap later, but the battle cost them time and allowed Piastri to close right in. On the penultimate lap, Oscar managed to pass Hamilton to secure P5, making it a decent double-points finish for the team. Norris did encounter a sensor failure towards the end but managed to nurse the car home in fourth, though he acknowledged they simply weren't quick enough on the day to challenge the top three teams.
