The sprint result was particularly painful for Hamilton because it allowed Antonelli to extend his championship lead to a commanding 53 points. Worse still for the Ferrari camp, George Russell took the sprint win for Mercedes, putting the reigning world champion's team-mate right on Hamilton's heels in the standings. Russell now trails Antonelli by just three points, meaning Hamilton's got pressure coming from both directions. The situation's gone from bad to worse real quick.

Lando Norris grabbed pole position for Sunday's main race after claiming a brilliant victory last time out at Hungary, and he'll be hoping McLaren's recent form continues. Antonelli qualified third, sitting pretty as the points leader, while Hamilton will need a stellar drive from fifth to get back into this fight. With nearly half the season presumably still to come, Hamilton's running out of time to make up ground on Antonelli if Mercedes keep this pace up.

At the team level, Mercedes is absolutely dominating. They've extended their constructors lead over Ferrari to 76 points after the sprint, and it's looking increasingly likely that the Silver Arrows will cruise to another title. For Hamilton, it's a frustrating situation. He's got the talent, he's got the experience, but he's not got the car or the luck at the moment. His eighth title looks like it'll have to wait another day.
