Villeneuve Warns Antonelli Has a Major Weakness Against Verstappen in Title Fight
1lessidiot
Jacques Villeneuve reckons Kimi Antonelli would face a serious problem if he ever went toe-to-toe with Max Verstappen for an F1 championship. Right now, Antonelli's absolutely dominating the 2026 drivers' standings with an 84-point lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, but the legendary ex-champion thinks the Italian's mistake rate could cost him dearly against the Red Bull ace.

Villeneuve's analysis comes after watching Antonelli's performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia last weekend, where the 20-year-old finished second to Verstappen. Despite his commanding points lead, Antonelli made a costly error in the final corner when he slid and clipped a bollard, getting lucky that it didn't force an unplanned pit stop. Villeneuve points out that Verstappen almost never makes these kinds of mistakes when he's chasing a good result, driving with incredible precision when it matters most.
The comparison between the two drivers goes beyond just occasional slip-ups. Verstappen's shown he can punish inconsistency, as evidenced by the gap between him and his own teammate Isack Hadjar, as well as how he compares to Antonelli's performances. Villeneuve highlighted that if these two were fighting for a title, Antonelli's higher error rate would become a significant factor deciding the outcome.

Antonelli's had a brilliant 2026 so far with eight Grand Prix wins already, but he's been let down by mistakes that haven't cost him points thanks to his massive lead. He crashed in Q1 at Baku when there was no need to push, and accidentally aborted his final Q3 lap in Austria after misreading a yellow flag. He's also suffered reliability issues like a battery problem in Barcelona and a brake shield breaking at Silverstone, none of which have properly punished his points tally.

Red Bull and Verstappen have made serious progress with updates at recent races and look capable of winning now, but as Villeneuve notes, it's probably too little too late for a proper title fight this season. Meanwhile, Russell's championship hopes look finished after his retirement in Malaysia and an upcoming engine penalty at Singapore means he'll start from the back of the grid.
