Verstappen Leads the Way as F1 Swelters at Sepang's Big Return

Formula 1's back in Malaysia for the first time in eight years, and Max Verstappen wasted no time reminding everyone why he owns this place. The Red Bull driver absolutely dominated the opening practice session at Sepang, slapping down a 1:37.520 to top the timesheets and signal his intent straight out of the box. It was three-tenths clear of George Russell's Mercedes effort, which tells you everything about how much pace Verstappen had in reserve on what turned out to be a scorching hot Friday.

Conditions were absolutely brutal out there. The air temp hit 33 degrees Celsius during the 60-minute session, but the track itself was cooking at over 58 degrees. That kind of heat puts real pressure on the tyres and the whole operation. Russell keeping it tidy in second shows Mercedes isn't sleeping, but Verstappen looked genuinely comfortable despite the chaos.

Behind the top two, Isaac Hadjar in the second Red Bull rounded out the podium positions, though he was nearly eight-tenths back from his teammate. Charles Leclerc led the Ferrari charge in fourth, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli slotted in fifth, trying to protect his 66-point advantage in the standings. Antonelli's been under the pump since losing ground to Russell in Baku, so he'll need to dial it in as the weekend progresses.

Lewis Hamilton completed the top six for Ferrari, and he'll be hungry to add to his single win at this track. Pierre Gasly, who ironically made his F1 debut the last time F1 visited Sepang, grabbed seventh spot for Alpine. The Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad filled out the top 10, with Nico Hulkenberg rounding it out.

Grid penalties are already starting to rain down. Hadjar will drop back due to engine components, while Lindblad's taking a proper engine overhaul that'll send him to the back of the grid. Franco Colapinto's also taken a fresh engine, stacking his penalty from that Baku safety car chaos on top of his current drop. It's shaping up to be a proper wild weekend in Malaysia.
