Max Verstappen has kicked off the rescheduled Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia with a commanding display in Friday's opening practice session. The Red Bull driver clocked a 1m37.520s at Sepang International Circuit to set the pace, marking the circuit's return to the F1 calendar for the first time since 2017. The race had to be relocated from its original April slot in Bahrain due to ongoing regional unrest, prompting F1 and the organisers to find an alternative venue 6000km away in Malaysia.

George Russell came closest to Verstappen's benchmark, finishing second for Mercedes with a 1m37.903s, just 0.383 seconds adrift. Isack Hadjar rounded out the Red Bull lockout in third place in the sister car, though the French driver will face a grid penalty for an engine change this weekend. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli made it two Mercedes cars inside the top five, sitting fifth, while Charles Leclerc's Ferrari split the Silver Arrows in fourth.

Lewis Hamilton managed a solid start in sixth position with Ferrari, over a tenth behind Antonelli. Pierre Gasly headed the Racing Bulls contingent for Alpine, with Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completing that battle just outside the top seven. Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top 10 for Audi, keeping the momentum rolling for the works team. The McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris both found themselves outside the top 10 at the end of the session, suggesting there's work to do before Saturday's qualifying.

It's a strong reminder that Sepang remains one of F1's trickier circuits. The circuit's tropical climate and demanding layout have caught out plenty of teams over the years, and this return comes at a unique moment in the season with championship implications still very much at stake. All eyes will be on whether Verstappen can maintain this advantage through the rest of the weekend or if the competition tightens up.
