Leclerc Edges Hadjar and Norris in Sepang FP2 as Rain Threat Looms

Charles Leclerc stamped his authority on Friday's second practice session at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, setting the fastest time at Sepang International Circuit despite looming rain clouds that had the whole grid on edge. The Ferrari driver clocked a 1m 37.528s to edge out Red Bull's Isack Hadjar by just 0.099 seconds, with McLaren's Lando Norris completing the top three just 0.137s back. It was a solid response from the Monegasque after Max Verstappen had set the early pace, but Leclerc's late effort held firm as the session concluded.

The session itself was a bit of a lottery with weather uncertainty hanging over Sepang all afternoon. Most drivers got out early to bank some mileage before a potential downpour, though it never actually arrived. Verstappen looked strong initially, going two tenths clear of George Russell at one point, but the four-time World Champion ended up fourth overall. He did spend the final stages in the garage, opting not to run the softer tyres that many others switched to, which probably cost him on the timing charts. Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five ahead of Oscar Piastri, Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly.

There was drama scattered throughout FP2, naturally. Gabriel Bortoleto had to swerve to avoid Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari at one point, and the stewards took note. Hamilton himself radioed about visibility issues with his right mirror, which earned him an investigation after the session wrapped. Bortoleto and Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad spent several laps dancing with each other through the corners, which was entertaining if nothing else. Late in the session, Bortoleto's Audi came to a halt trackside, prompting yellow flags and a Virtual Safety Car with just two minutes remaining.

The whole day's work gives the teams plenty to digest heading into Saturday. Free Practice 3 kicks off at 1230 local time, followed by Qualifying at 1600. Ferrari will be pleased with Leclerc's showing, while Red Bull might be scratching their heads a bit about Verstappen's final ranking. Mercedes clearly brought some upgrades to Malaysia, though they're still hunting for that perfect setup balance. Rain is still forecast, so Saturday could throw another curveball into the mix before we even get to the main event.
