Fred Vasseur isn't about to change Ferrari's game plan just because McLaren's had a good run lately. The Scuderia boss is convinced his team's approach to development is the right one for the remainder of the 2026 season, even as the Woking squad picks up wins with their bulk upgrade packages. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been firing on all cylinders since McLaren debuted their massive update packages, most recently bringing a revised floor setup to the Hungarian Grand Prix that helped Norris take victory and pole position ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

But here's where Vasseur draws the line. He reckons Ferrari and McLaren are operating on totally different philosophies when it comes to development, and he's not convinced McLaren's approach is necessarily better long-term. While McLaren likes to bundle their upgrades together and unleash them all at once, usually at marquee rounds like Miami and Canada, Ferrari's strategy is to drip-feed new parts to the SF-26 whenever they're ready. That means introducing fresh components at nearly every race to maintain momentum and keep pressure on the Mercedes duo of Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.

Vasseur explained his thinking pretty clearly, saying that sure, McLaren takes a big step forward each time they roll out a new package, but Ferrari's philosophy is fundamentally different. He's adamant that the Scuderia must keep this rapid development cadence going because there's still a massive chunk of the season left. With around 12 races remaining after the summer break and plenty of room for improvement across the chassis and other areas, Ferrari can't afford to slow down.

It's worth noting though that both teams have actually dabbled in each other's approach throughout the season. Ferrari did drop major upgrade packages at Miami and Barcelona, while McLaren has also brought smaller tweaks to various races. So the distinction Vasseur's drawing isn't quite as black and white as he's suggesting. Still, his point about maintaining Ferrari's development momentum makes sense. Charles Leclerc sits fourth in the standings, 81 points adrift of Antonelli, so keeping the upgrade train rolling could be crucial in Ferrari's fight to salvage this championship battle.
