Russell Planning Las Vegas Grid Penalty While Hamilton Demands Singapore Changes

There's plenty going on in the Formula 1 paddock right now even with no racing this weekend. George Russell is reportedly gearing up to take a grid penalty at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November due to an upgraded power unit component. This comes after he already started from the back of the grid in Singapore following an engine change in Malaysia, so another penalty might seem rough, but it's all part of the strategic planning for Mercedes as they push toward the championship.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, isn't too happy about how Marina Bay played out for him. The Ferrari driver finished sixth at the Singapore Grand Prix and has been vocal about what needs to change at the street circuit. He's calling for a longer straight to be added to the track layout, arguing that overtaking opportunities are way too limited as things stand. It's a fair point when you think about how tough it is to pass around there.

The championship battle heading into the final stretch is absolutely mental. Kimi Antonelli holds a 119-point lead over Max Verstappen in the standings with just six races left on the calendar. The Mercedes driver has been absolutely dominant with eight wins and fourteen podiums so far. Verstappen claimed back-to-back victories at Bahrain and Singapore though, so Red Bull is still very much in the fight despite that massive points gap.

Russell sits third in the standings with 238 points, while Hamilton sits fourth with 229 points. The Mercedes constructor's championship lead is pretty comfortable at this stage, but there's still plenty of racing left to play. Everyone will be gearing up for the Circuit of the Americas next weekend when the US Grand Prix kicks off on October 25th. The fight's far from over.
