Russell Holds Off Verstappen in Chaotic Baku Thriller as Safety Cars Shake Up Azerbaijan GP

George Russell delivered a masterclass in pressure handling to win a wild Azerbaijan Grand Prix, fending off a late charge from Max Verstappen by just a tenth of a second. The Mercedes driver started from pole and looked untouchable for much of the race, but two safety car periods turned Baku into a complete lottery and gave Verstappen a sniff at the top spot. Russell's composure during those restarts proved the difference, as he managed the restart traffic expertly to take the chequered flag and silence any doubters about his championship credentials.

The drama really kicked off on lap 29 when Williams' Alex Albon crashed, bringing out the first safety car and bunching the field back up. Russell was leading at the restart, but things got properly spicy when a multi-car pile-up between both Alpine drivers and Lando Norris in his McLaren erupted at Turn 1, forcing another caution. Verstappen had already made up serious ground after passing McLaren's Oscar Piastri at the first safety car restart, climbing from eighth on the grid to sit second. Red Bull's other driver, Isack Hadjar, grabbed his first podium since returning from a hand injury, finishing third and showing he's still got it after his absence.

It was a rough afternoon for some of the big names. Charles Leclerc brought home fourth place for Ferrari, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli putting together an impressive drive from 16th on the grid to finish fifth in the Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton managed sixth place in the other Ferrari, while Arvid Lindblad nipped ahead late to snatch seventh in the Racing Bulls. Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman rounded out the points for Haas, but Oscar Piastri's McLaren campaign ended with a lock-up that dropped him out of the points entirely. Both Aston Martin drivers failed to finish with technical issues, and Valtteri Bottas crashed out late on.

The result shows just how unpredictable Baku can be when the safety cars start flying. Russell proved he's got the racecraft to handle even the maddest circumstances, while Verstappen did everything he could to capitalize on the chaos. With multiple safety cars reshuffling the order, it was a reminder that sometimes luck plays as big a role as pure pace on the streets of Azerbaijan.
