George Russell delivered a masterclass in pressure handling at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off Max Verstappen in a nail-biting finish to take victory by just a tenth of a second. The Mercedes driver's win marks his third of the season and comes after two mid-race safety cars turned what looked like a comfortable afternoon into a tense battle for the checkered flag. Russell's performance was clinical when it mattered most, and the gap back to Verstappen shows just how competitive things are at the sharp end of the grid.

The real story of Baku, though, is what happened to the championship picture. Kimi Antonelli's lead at the top of the drivers' standings took a proper dent despite the 20-year-old recovering from 16th on the grid to finish fifth. Russell's victory chopped 15 points off his teammate's advantage, shrinking it from 81 points going into the weekend down to 66. That's still a healthy buffer, but Mercedes is clearly feeling the heat, and Russell isn't about to make life easy for Antonelli over the remaining races.

The chaos on track played right into Antonelli's hands though. Franco Colapinto's Alpine and Alex Albon's Williams incidents brought out those safety cars, which had the unintended consequence of removing potential points threats. Both Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris benefited from the restarts but ultimately couldn't capitalize, while Oscar Piastri's costly mistake further helped Antonelli's cause. It's the kind of race where the championship favourite gets a bit of luck when they need it most.

The constructors' battle saw big movements too. McLaren's scoreless weekend is a disaster for their title hopes, especially with Ferrari racking up a solid haul courtesy of Charles Leclerc's fourth place and Lewis Hamilton's sixth. Ferrari's second place in the standings just got that little bit more comfortable. Alpine, meanwhile, had an absolute shocker with their missed opportunity to close the gap to Racing Bulls, leaving them languishing in the fight for midfield points instead of mounting a proper challenge.
