George Russell has put Mercedes back on notice with a brilliant sprint qualifying performance at Zandvoort. The British driver claimed pole position for Saturday's sprint race with a dominant Q3 session, signaling that the Silver Arrows have their eyes firmly set on bouncing back after summer. It's the kind of statement qualifying lap that gets the whole paddock's attention, especially with the championship fight heating up after the Hungarian Grand Prix showed Lando Norris his McLaren has serious pace.

The qualifying was absolutely bonkers competitive in the top positions. Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc both finished within a tenth of Russell's pole time, with Oscar Piastri just missing out in fourth at 0.099 seconds behind. That's the kind of razor-thin margins we're seeing at this level right now, where a tenth of a second separates first from fourth. Ferrari and McLaren threw everything at it early in the session, while Mercedes waited patiently to strike when it mattered most.

Things got a bit tougher for the rest of the grid. Liam Lawson's return to Red Bull got off to a rough start when he was eliminated in Q2 with an 11th-place finish, losing nearly half a tenth to Max Verstappen and struggling to adapt to the car. Yuki Tsunoda also didn't make it through Q2, finishing 12th in his first competitive outing back in the sport. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton was pretty quiet, finishing seventh, while Pierre Gasly grabbed eighth for Alpine.

Aston Martin had a proper shocker with reliability issues cropping up on their upgraded Honda engines. Fernando Alonso's rear wing wing straight-line mode wasn't working properly, which left him dead last. Oliver Bearman was eliminated in Q1 alongside Carlos Sainz, with Esteban Ocon outqualifying his teammate for the second straight weekend. The French squad at least got some consolation with Gasly making Q3, though Gabriel Bortoleto showed Audi's been making progress with a solid ninth place.
