Russell Storms to Sprint Pole at Zandvoort as Verstappen Struggles at Home

George Russell absolutely nailed it in sprint qualifying at Circuit Zandvoort to claim pole position for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver produced a sensational lap around the sweeping dunes, edging out Lando Norris of McLaren in a tight battle for the front row. It's a brilliant result for Mercedes heading into the sprint, and Russell's delivered exactly what the team needed on the back of the summer break.

The real shock though is Max Verstappen's day going pear-shaped at his own home circuit. The four-time world champion and Red Bull Racing driver qualified in sixth place on row three after struggling with balance issues throughout the session. Understeer through the medium-speed corners clearly had him frustrated, and he couldn't get anywhere near the pace that Mercedes and McLaren are showing here. For a hometown hero in front of thousands of passionate Dutch fans, it's a disappointing position to start from.

Charles Leclerc put in a solid performance for Ferrari to grab third place, while Oscar Piastri kept McLaren competitive by taking fourth. Andrea Kimi Antonelli rounds out the top five in the other Mercedes, so Toto Wolff's team is looking seriously strong this weekend. Lewis Hamilton also made it through in seventh for Ferrari, and there's some serious talent further down the grid with Gabriel Bortoleto and the usual suspects all fighting for position.

The sprint grid is properly shaken up here at Zandvoort with just a couple of rounds left in the season. Russell and Norris will battle for those crucial points, while Max needs to find something fast if Red Bull's going to recover from what's been a difficult qualifying session. The Dutch crowd will be hoping their hero can stage a comeback in the sprint itself, because starting sixth is never ideal when you're chasing a championship.
