Red Bull Racing came out swinging on Friday at Sepang, with Max Verstappen setting the pace in the opening practice session by a commanding margin. The Dutchman's opening lap of 1:37.520 showed the team brought serious pace to Malaysia, though there were some overheating concerns to monitor as the track proved scorching. Things got interesting in the afternoon when Isack Hadjar impressed everyone by posting the second fastest time in FP2, proving Red Bull's package is genuinely strong this weekend.

The heat worked against both Verstappen and the rest of the field in the second session. Max ended up fourth but crucially didn't need to run the soft tyres, setting his fastest time on the mediums instead. Meanwhile, Hadjar showed real promise with second place, though he'll be taking a five-place grid penalty on Sunday after fitting a new Internal Combustion Engine. Technical Director Pierre Wache was pleased with the progress, noting they've made a solid start despite the brutal conditions on a very dusty track.

Ferrari struck back when it mattered though, with Charles Leclerc topping the timing sheets in FP2 with an impressive soft tyre run. The Monaco driver's time of 1:37.528 put him at the front, with teammate Lewis Hamilton following three tenths back in fifth. The British veteran had a tough day though, picking up a warning from stewards for blocking Gabriel Bortoleto, and struggled to find the right balance in low-grip conditions.

Both Leclerc and Hamilton acknowledged there's heaps of work ahead before qualifying. Charles was realistic about the tight field and emphasized that degradation will be the crucial factor this weekend, with tiny setup differences potentially making massive differences. Lewis echoed that sentiment, noting how difficult it was finding grip and balance, though he felt they're not too far off the pace. The stage is set for a fascinating battle on Saturday with only a few qualifying laps available on fresh tyres.
