Lando Norris absolutely dominated the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid's Madring circuit, but sometimes being the quickest car on track just isn't enough. The defending World Champion started from pole position and controlled the opening stint beautifully, building a commanding lead of over six seconds ahead of Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The McLaren MCL40 was genuinely the fastest thing out there, and Norris was managing the race perfectly. Then came the Virtual Safety Car that changed everything.

The timing was absolutely brutal for Norris. Right after he'd passed the pit lane entry, Lance Stroll's Aston Martin stopped on track and triggered the safety car period. This meant the cars behind him, including Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and George Russell, got to pit immediately while Norris had to wait a lap. By the time he finally dove in, the race had gone back to green flag conditions, and suddenly he was rejoining behind both Mercedes drivers and stuck in traffic. A slightly slower pit stop didn't help matters, but Norris was quick to point out that the pit stop wasn't the real problem here. It was pure circumstance.

Despite that setback, Norris showed exactly why he's the champion by charging back through the field. He moved into fourth after Russell pitted again, then claimed third when Charles Leclerc eventually made his stop. He kept hunting down Verstappen in the closing laps but couldn't quite find a passing opportunity on the complex Madring layout. He crossed the line third, frustrated but knowing the pace was there to win it all.

Oscar Piastri's day was tougher from the start. Starting on hard tyres in seventh, he picked up damage from George Russell on the opening lap that knocked his front wing and compromised his car's balance for the rest of the race. Traffic made it nearly impossible to make up ground at Madrid, and when Oscar finally pitted on lap 42, the medium tyres didn't give him the performance boost he needed. He finished eighth with four points in the bag.

McLaren leaves Madrid with a podium and a double points finish, which sounds solid on paper. But everyone knows this one got away.
