The whole mess started with six pit lane speeding penalties handed out to five drivers after the Monaco race. Gasly got hit hard, dropped from third place all the way down to seventh. They lodged a Right of Review, arguing that the penalties stemmed from a timing loop error in the pit lane itself. They won their appeal, Gasly got his podium back, and everyone thought it was finally settled.

Wrong. McLaren and Red Bull decided to appeal as well, and their cases went all the way to the FIA Court of Appeal in Paris back in late August. Now the verdict is in, and here's the kicker: Gasly's penalties have been reinstated. He's back down to seventh place, Hadjar's back up to third, and Oscar Piastri has moved into fourth as a result. It's absolutely mad that a race from June is still reshaping the championship picture in September.

The good news for the title contenders is that none of this actually impacts the fight at the top. The Alpine driver's points tally has taken another hit, and his team's constructors' championship hopes have been damaged in the process. Meanwhile, Hadjar, Piastri, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad all benefit from the rejigged results.
