McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull Fire Back at Austin With Major Upgrade Pushes

The upgrade battle's heating up at Circuit of the Americas, and Mercedes' rivals just made their move. McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull have all rolled out fresh components for the United States Grand Prix, while Mercedes decided to sit this round out and focus on maximizing what they already brought from Malaysia. With the championship fight looking genuinely tight between the top four teams, every tenth of a second counts right now.

Ferrari's come with the most aggressive package of the leading squads. The Scuderia has reworked its floor, sidepods and diffuser to chase more downforce without losing efficiency. They've tweaked the floor's leading edge and support structures at both ends of the car, plus redesigned the sidepod inlet and undercut geometry. The new diffuser setup is meant to generate extra aerodynamic load more efficiently. That's a serious bit of development work for one weekend.

McLaren's brought three updates focusing on their front and rear corners plus a modified diffuser. The changes work together to improve how air flows around the front tyres while boosting load at the rear. Red Bull, meanwhile, has gone with two smaller changes, adding an extra vane to the front-wing endplate that helps with tyre temperature measurements and aerodynamic load. They've also updated an elastomeric gaiter at the front corner to reduce the chance of material damage under hard steering.

It's not just the big three either. Racing Bulls have submitted four upgrades targeting their front wing, rear wing, floor and engine cover. Audi brought three changes including a new brake duct, while Alpine redesigned their rear floor corner and rear-wing flaps. Cadillac's updated their forward floor fences and sidepod cooling louvres. Williams, Aston Martin and Haas decided against bringing updates for Austin, keeping their development focus elsewhere.

The contrast is telling. Mercedes isn't pushing hard this weekend, betting on extracting everything from their Malaysia upgrade package despite admitting it's been troublesome. Meanwhile, their rivals are all attacking. It's a risky strategy if Mercedes falls further back, but a smart one if they're confident about bouncing back later in the season. Either way, Austin's shaping up to be a real test of where everyone actually stands in this tightly contested championship fight.
