Max Dominates Singapore While Kimi Closes In on Historic Championship

Max Verstappen finally broke his Singapore curse with an absolutely clinical performance at Marina Bay. The Red Bull driver didn't put a foot wrong all weekend, securing both the Sprint pole and win before topping qualifying on Saturday. The 62-lap race was never really a contest, as Verstappen led from lights to flag and picked up his second consecutive win of the 2026 season. It's a timely reminder of just how dangerous the Dutchman can be when everything clicks into place.

While Verstappen was celebrating, the real championship story continues to be Andrea Kimi Antonelli's meteoric rise. The Ferrari driver pulled off a stunning late-race move on both Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton to claim third place and his 14th podium of the campaign. That result puts him within touching distance of the 2026 title, and he now has the chance to wrap up a historic maiden championship and become the youngest-ever World Champion at Austin in just two weeks. It's been an absolutely remarkable season for the Italian.

Charles Leclerc had to settle for second after what he himself admitted was a crucial mistake at the first corner. Despite getting a better start than Verstappen, he was squeezed into the first chicane and couldn't recover from there. His Soft tyres also took a beating as the race progressed, which meant he couldn't mount a serious challenge for the lead. Still, a solid points finish keeps Ferrari in the mix as the season heads toward its climax.

More F1 news: Ferrari's Singapore Gamble: How the Strategy Call on Hamilton Cost Them Dearly

Lewis Hamilton's afternoon went from bad to worse thanks to some questionable strategic calls. Starting third, he was forced onto an early pit stop and essentially a two-stop strategy because of his Medium tyre stint. Things got messier when he voluntarily abandoned a pit opportunity under the VSC, leaving him out for a 40-plus lap marathon on the softest rubber. By the end, he'd been picked off by Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Antonelli, finishing sixth and looking utterly frustrated with the whole affair.

Lando Norris looked like he might grab a podium until a move on Hamilton didn't quite come off as planned. He ended up fourth, and afterwards he was pretty scathing about the McLaren, calling it an impossible car to drive. That's quite the turnaround from the praise he was heaping on it after wins at Hungary and the Netherlands. George Russell soldiered on from 19th on the grid to secure ninth, while Isack Hadjar managed a solid top-10 finish for Red Bull despite power unit headaches all weekend.
