Leclerc's Monza Crash Brings Red Flag as Antonelli Charges Through the Field

The Italian Grand Prix turned into drama at Monza when Charles Leclerc crashed his Ferrari, forcing officials to deploy the red flag and halt proceedings. The incident left Ferrari fans in tears as Leclerc emerged from the wreckage visibly shaken, though thankfully without apparent injury. The crash came after Pierre Gasly had pulled off the shock of the season by claiming pole position for Alpine, with George Russell securing second on the grid ahead of Oscar Piastri.

When the race restarted following the 30-minute delay, Kimi Antonelli made the most of the second chance to gain ground. The Mercedes driver started from the pits due to an engine change penalty but wasted no time carving through the field. By lap six, Antonelli had already cracked the top six and was setting his sights on his team-mate Russell, who had taken the lead as the race resumed.

The early laps turned into a complete shakeup at the front. Max Verstappen in his Red Bull quickly moved into contention, eventually passing Russell to take the lead. Gasly, who'd started from pole position, had a nightmare restart and tumbled down the order as Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri, and Antonelli all got past him within just a few corners. By lap eight, Antonelli had already made up several positions and was hunting down Piastri in what was turning into a brilliant recovery drive.

The race continued to shuffle as drivers battled through the opening stint. Antonelli's rapid progress from the back of the grid meant he was limiting the damage to his championship lead over Russell, who was running up front. By the time yellow flags appeared later in the race for Lance Stroll's issue, Mercedes found themselves with both drivers running competitively, with Antonelli already demonstrating why he's leading the championship despite his grid penalty setback.
