Pierre Gasly just pulled off something special at Monza. The Alpine driver snatched his maiden Formula 1 pole position in the dying moments of Q3, denying George Russell's Mercedes a shot at the front row. It's a massive moment for both Gasly and Alpine, coming completely out of the blue at a track where the Frenchman already has history. Back in 2020, he won the Italian Grand Prix, and now he's become the first French pole-sitter since 1997.

The drama unfolded right at the end of the session when Gasly found that extra tenth to pip Russell, who'll start second. Oscar Piastri rounded out the top three for McLaren, but he had a shocker on his final lap, locking up at the first chicane when he was supposed to give his teammate a slipstream. Down in ninth, Lando Norris couldn't work his way through the order despite McLaren's recent run of wins. Franco Colapinto's Alpine came home eighth, giving the team a brilliant one-two in qualifying. The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton qualified fourth and fifth, just ahead of Max Verstappen in sixth.

Alpine came out swinging from Q1, with both their cars running near the top of the order. Gasly led the way while Colapinto slotted in fourth, sandwiching Verstappen and Norris between them. Norris had a rough time of it, needing a second run after cutting the first chicane, and Piastri made the same mistake later. Yuki Tsunoda, filling in for Liam Lawson, missed the cut by a whisker, finishing seventeenth. Several big names didn't make it out, including Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, with the latter hitting 100 Q1 eliminations on his 202nd qualifying attempt.

Q2 saw McLaren dominating for most of the session before Kimi Antonelli made a last-gasp move to take the top spot. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were living dangerously in the Ferraris. Hamilton scraped through by just a thousandth of a second ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto. Liam Lawson had Max Verstappen helping him on his final lap, but a bit of contact with Piastri in the first chicane ruined his chances of reaching Q3 and lending a tow to his Red Bull teammate.
