Leclerc Leads FP2 Charge at Sepang While Mercedes Quietly Upgrades

Charles Leclerc grabbed the headlines in Free Practice 2 at the Bahrain GP held in Malaysia, posting a best lap of 1:37.528 on soft tyres to edge out Isack Hadjar's Red Bull by just 0.099 seconds. The Ferrari driver completed 26 laps in sweltering heat at the Sepang International Circuit, cementing Ferrari's strong pace as the session progressed. Hadjar had to pit earlier due to a minor technical issue but recovered to post a solid second-place time across his 22 laps.

Lando Norris rounded out the top three for McLaren, though the reigning world champion had a heart-stopping moment near the session's end when he nearly collided with Sergio Pérez's Cadillac at the pit lane entrance. Lewis Hamilton also featured in the action, creating an obstruction that visibly frustrated Gabriel Bortoleto, who was running a race simulation against Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls.

The session ended dramatically when Bortoleto's Audi suffered a mechanical failure on track. The Brazilian radioed that he suspected a gearbox problem, bringing out the red flags in the final minutes. Before that drama, Max Verstappen had been putting in solid work for Red Bull, though he continued to complain about comfort issues with his seat setup over the radio. Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari managed fifth place, three-tenths down on Leclerc but just ahead of Verstappen.

Mercedes kept things relatively quiet, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli posting the seventh and eighth fastest times respectively on medium compound tyres. Both drivers' benchmark times were slower than the frontrunners, but the team's running strategy told a different story. During longer runs, Antonelli was actually two tenths quicker per lap than Norris on mediums with 11 laps, while the McLaren driver was on softs with 12 laps. Mercedes is bringing a significant upgrade package to Malaysia and needed this session to understand and develop it.

Down the order, Pierre Gasly grabbed 10th for Alpine, sandwiched between Liam Lawson's Racing Bulls in ninth. Esteban Ocon found things tricky in 14th, while Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin and Oliver Bearman's Haas rounded out the scoring positions. Franco Colapinto finished last, though the Williams driver was deliberately focusing on long-run preparation knowing he'll face a 15-place grid penalty anytime.
