Kimi Antonelli arrives at Monza this weekend with a stranglehold on the 2026 championship, sitting a commanding 59 points clear of his Mercedes teammates George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. The 19-year-old has put together a stunning season after a rough rookie campaign, posting six wins and ten podiums from twelve races. He's on the verge of becoming Italy's first world champion since 1953, and his home race presents the perfect chance to put this thing to bed.

But here's the thing, Antonelli isn't taking his foot off the gas or getting complacent about his rivals. When asked about the biggest threats to his title, he didn't point to Russell or Hamilton. Instead, he turned his focus squarely on Lando Norris and McLaren. The defending champion has suddenly found his feet in the MCL40 and is absolutely flying right now. Two wins in the last two races mean Norris has clawed his way back into contention, though he's still 83 points adrift.

Antonelli's wariness of Norris makes complete sense. McLaren appear to have unlocked the performance of Mercedes' power unit, and the Woking team look genuinely dangerous heading into the second half of the season. Norris has been putting in some seriously impressive drives over recent weeks, with victories at Hungary and the Netherlands proving he's ready to fight hard until Abu Dhabi. Even expert analysts are tipping him as the driver of the season so far.

The Mercedes leader acknowledges that while Russell and Hamilton have a mountain to climb, neither poses quite the threat that Norris currently does. The McLaren driver's recent form has been unmissable, and at Monza he'll be looking to add another win to his tally. For Antonelli, it's a reminder that nothing's been decided yet, even with that huge points buffer. Norris is hungry, his car is working, and he's absolutely the rival you can't take your eye off.
