Monza's got this almost magical ability to deliver absolute chaos, heartbreak, and pure euphoria all wrapped into one afternoon. Few circuits on the entire calendar can match what happens at the Italian Grand Prix. The place just has a way of creating moments that stick with you forever and basically define entire eras of the sport. Charles Leclerc even said it best before the 2025 edition, calling Monza special because winning there in front of the tifosi is about as good as it gets in racing.

Let's start with the most bonkers finish ever recorded. Back in 1971, Peter Gethin started 11th and fought through 55 laps of absolute madness where around 25 lead changes happened with eight different drivers swapping positions constantly. On the final lap, Gethin over-revved his BRM and edged ahead to beat Ronnie Peterson by just 0.01 seconds. The top five were separated by only 0.61 seconds. That's still the closest finish in F1 history, and it was Gethin's only ever victory.

Then there's the time Ayrton Senna's McLaren got absolutely destroyed with just two laps to go in 1988. McLaren had won every single race that season and looked unstoppable heading to the chequered flag. But Jean-Louis Schlesser, filling in for Nigel Mansell, clipped Senna's right rear at the chicane and broke his suspension. Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto waltzed through in their Ferraris to grab a stunning 1-2. McLaren still finished with 15 wins from 16 races, but that perfect season was gone forever.

Christian Fittipaldi produced one of the most spectacular moments you'll ever see at Monza in 1993. While battling his own Minardi teammate Pierluigi Martini for seventh on the final lap at nearly 300 km/h, his left-front wheel clipped Martini's right-rear and launched him skyward. The car did a complete backward somersault, landed back on four wheels pointing the right direction, and skidded across the finish line. Fittipaldi was classified eighth. Absolutely bonkers.

More recently, Lewis Hamilton's pit lane communication breakdown at the 2020 race handed Pierre Gasly an incredible fairytale victory for AlphaTauri. Hamilton pitted during a closed pit lane, took a penalty, and dropped to last. A red flag restart shuffled everything around and Gasly somehow found himself leading. He held off Carlos Sainz by 0.415 seconds for a maiden win that had the whole paddock in shock. Then in 2021, Max Verstappen and Hamilton clashed spectacularly at Turn 1-2 when Verstappen's Red Bull got launched into the air and landed on top of Hamilton's Mercedes. The halo probably saved Hamilton from serious injury that day.
