Antonelli got a brilliant start off the line on the Lap 5 restart and actually took the lead from Norris before Turn 1, but the McLaren driver wasn't about to gift it away. As Antonelli got boxed in behind Lewis Hamilton, who Ferrari had left out on old hard tyres as part of their one-stop strategy, Norris spotted his chance. He went for the outside at Turn 1 and pulled off a stunning pass that Palmer absolutely loved. What really impressed the former driver was the confidence and precision, especially Norris adjusting his brake bias to nail the move and avoid locking up under pressure.

Palmer told the official F1 website exactly what made the overtake special: 'It reminded me slightly of Hakkinen's famous move on Schumacher back at Spa in 2000.' The comparison is apt because both moves involved a third car playing an unwitting role. Hakkinen used Ricardo Zonta as a marker when he passed Michael Schumacher in that legendary Belgian Grand Prix clash, and Norris did something similar with Hamilton. Palmer praised how Norris was sliding through Turn 13 on the absolute limit, desperate to find an opening, before finally making his move with complete commitment.

Once Norris got past Antonelli, Hamilton's worn tyres made him easy prey despite Ferrari's strategy gamble. Mercedes tried to rescue Antonelli with a late pit stop under the virtual safety car and even had George Russell move aside, but Norris was simply too strong that day.
