His reasoning is that by publicly airing his dissatisfaction with the Red Bull cockpit, he's essentially putting out an open signal to the only other competitive team capable of challenging for wins. The messages get picked up by fans and media worldwide, which isn't something that happens by accident.

Croft explained that Red Bull's car sits on a knife-edge. When everything's perfect, it's genuinely brilliant, but the slightest issue, whether from damage or setup, turns it into a nightmare to drive. That said, he reckons Verstappen's constant moaning this season suggests something beyond just technical frustrations. He wondered aloud whether Max and his representatives are deliberately engineering an exit from Red Bull and potentially engineering a move to McLaren.

The timing is worth noting here. Verstappen can now use an exit clause in his contract because he's currently sitting outside the top three in the championship standings. Red Bull wants him to extend and give up that escape route, but he's repeatedly refused to commit to 2027, signaling he's keeping his options open. Meanwhile, McLaren have shown no sign of abandoning Oscar Piastri despite a tougher 2026 compared to his 2025 campaign, though Zak Brown and Andrea Stella could always change their minds.

Whether Verstappen's radio rants are genuine complaints or calculated messaging remains anyone's guess.
