Grid Shakeup in Austin: Bortoleto Slapped with Monster 80-Place Penalty, Colapinto and Lindblad Also Lose Positions

The 2026 United States Grand Prix starting grid has been completely reshuffled after the stewards handed down power-unit penalties to three drivers on Saturday. Gabriel Bortoleto copped the worst of it, dropping from 14th on the grid all the way to 22nd and last after Audi made extensive component changes to his car. Franco Colapinto and Arvid Lindblad also suffered grid drops, moving from 15th to 21st and ninth to 14th respectively. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli held firm on pole position ahead of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar.

Bortoleto's situation was particularly brutal. Audi initially fitted a fourth energy store and fourth power-unit control electronics unit to the Brazilian's machine, which already meant a 20-place penalty. But the team wasn't done there. Before Saturday's running, they went ahead and replaced the internal-combustion engine, turbocharger, exhaust system, energy store, control electronics, MGU-K and another power-unit element entirely. That second round of changes stacked on additional penalties, resulting in a massive cumulative 80-place sanction for the weekend. Under F1's back-of-grid rules, once you're that far back, the actual grid positions don't match the penalty count, so Bortoleto only drops eight spots from qualifying. Still, it wrecked what had been a genuinely promising qualifying performance where he'd made it through to Q2.

Franco Colapinto's Alpine suffered a ten-place penalty after the team fitted a fourth control electronics unit beyond the permitted allocation, moving the Argentine from 15th to 21st. It's a frustrating blow for a driver showing real pace in the midfield. Arvid Lindblad's Racing Bulls ran into trouble for using his sixth internal-combustion engine of the season, which already exceeded his permitted allocation. The five-place sanction dropped him from a solid ninth place qualifying effort down to 14th.

The penalties mean Liam Lawson is now the highest-placed Racing Bulls driver on the grid, sitting ninth. The reshuffled midfield also sees Pierre Gasly, Nico Hülkenberg, Fernando Alonso and Oliver Bearman all moving up a spot thanks to Lindblad's drop. For Sunday's race in Austin, it's Kimi Antonelli's pole to lose as Mercedes looks to take the championship fight to Ferrari and Red Bull.
