Grid Shake-Up at Singapore: Russell Dropped to Back, Hülkenberg Survives Penalty Drama

The Singapore Grand Prix starting grid's been properly shuffled after a tense qualifying session that kept everyone on edge. Nico Hülkenberg was sweating bullets waiting to find out if he'd face a penalty after setting the eleventh-fastest lap. The Audi driver found himself in Carlos Sainz's line at Turn 5 when Sainz was trying to make a final Q3 push, but it turned out to be a technical timing system mess rather than Hülkenberg's fault.

Here's where it gets messy. The timing system initially showed Sainz had missed the cutoff to make another qualifying attempt, so Hülkenberg wasn't even warned about being in the way. Turns out Sainz actually had made it in time, but by the time the stewards corrected the system, it was too late for Audi to react. The stewards eventually cleared Hülkenberg of any wrongdoing, and he'll start from tenth place on the grid.

The real bombshell though is George Russell getting relegated to the back of the field. The Mercedes star actually made it through to Q3 and clocked the sixth-fastest time, but he's running new engine parts that exceed the quota limits after his failure in Malaysia. That's forced him down to 21st on the grid. Meanwhile, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar will start from dead last after failing to even set a timed lap in qualifying.

So Max Verstappen's holding pole position ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, with Kimi Antonelli fourth in the other Mercedes. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri line up fifth and sixth for McLaren, while poor Carlos Sainz had to settle for 13th after all that qualifying chaos. It's all to play for when lights out comes around at the Marina Bay circuit.
