Antonelli Extends Championship Lead After Stunning Monza Victory

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has pulled further clear in the 2026 F1 title fight after a brilliant drive to victory at Monza. The Mercedes driver started from 19th on the grid following a power unit change penalty but absolutely delivered when it mattered, taking his seventh win of the season and extending his championship lead to 66 points over team-mate George Russell. It's a result that'll make everyone sit up and take notice, because pulling off a win from that far back is no joke.

The race itself was wild. Charles Leclerc crashed out on lap two at the final corner, which triggered a red flag and gave the field a reset. When racing resumed, Antonelli quickly made his way up into the top ten and then set his sights on Russell, who'd been leading. The turning point came when Lance Stroll stopped on track and the VSC came out. Mercedes pitted Antonelli for fresh medium tyres while Russell stayed out on worn hards, and that tyre advantage proved decisive. Antonelli swept past his team-mate late on and cruised home to seal the deal.

Antonelli's win makes him the first Italian to win at Monza since 1966, which is honestly pretty special when you think about it. His championship lead is now a commanding 66 points ahead of Russell's 201, with Lewis Hamilton back in third on 191 points. The Ferrari driver has had a rough time lately and things aren't getting easier. Max Verstappen rounded out the podium in third for Red Bull, while Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri filled the spots behind for McLaren.

Mercedes' one two at the top also extended their constructors' lead dramatically. They're now on 468 points, well clear of Ferrari in second with 346. It's looking increasingly like this championship and constructor's title could be sewn up sooner rather than later if Antonelli and Mercedes keep performing at this level. The momentum is firmly with the Silver Arrows right now.
