Antonelli Cruises to Eighth Win at Madrid, Hamilton Scoreless as Mercedes Extends Stranglehold

Andrea Kimi Antonelli absolutely dominated the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid's new Madring circuit, claiming his eighth victory of the 2026 season and putting himself in cruise control for the championship. The Mercedes driver now sits on 292 points, and after George Russell finished fifth in Barcelona, Antonelli's lead over his own teammate has expanded to a commanding 81 points. With those kinds of numbers stacking up, the Mercedes machine looks nearly unstoppable heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

The real damage report of the day belonged to Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari driver recorded his first scoreless finish of the entire season, a brutal blow that sent him tumbling 101 points adrift of Antonelli. Hamilton had been keeping the deficit somewhat manageable until Madrid, but a tough afternoon means he's now trailing by more than a full race win's worth of points. Third place in the standings is still his, but the championship picture just got a lot grimmer for the seven-time world champion and his Scuderia outfit.

Lando Norris at McLaren had his own frustrations with the Virtual Safety Car timing at Madring, but he continues to lurk dangerously close to Hamilton. The Brit finished third on the day, moving to just five points behind Lewis in the championship standings. With Norris knocking on the door and Max Verstappen in fifth starting to make up ground, Hamilton's fight for at least a podium finish in the title race is getting tighter by the race.

Further back, there were valuable points to celebrate for several drivers. Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto, Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg all banked championship points at Madrid. Charles Leclerc managed fifth place, staying ahead of Verstappen but 125 points back from leader Antonelli. The Red Bull driver still has work to do if he wants to challenge the top two, though he's keeping pace in the midfield fight.
