Antonelli's second place finish came as a genuine surprise to Mercedes, who didn't expect to be in the fight for pole when the weekend began. The 2026 championship leader put together a strong final effort and thought he might have done enough, but Norris simply had that extra tenth tucked away. Max Verstappen rounded out the top three for Red Bull, finishing 0.140 seconds down after topping Q2, while Lewis Hamilton qualified fourth for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc took fifth, George Russell was sixth in the second Mercedes, and Oscar Piastri managed seventh in the second McLaren after a disappointing session that he felt could've been much stronger.

Piastri wasn't hiding his disappointment with seventh place, admitting the session felt messy and that he didn't have quite enough on his final push lap. He pointed to needing two sets of tires in Q1 as putting the team on the back foot early, and once you lose rhythm around Madring, it's incredibly difficult to recover. Despite the frustration though, Piastri acknowledged that Lando's pole position proved the car had the pace when everything clicked, and he's backing the team to figure out strategy and tire management for Sunday's race.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella called Norris's pole a masterpiece and was delighted with the result, though he did note something incredible about the lap. Norris managed to secure pole despite making a three-tenth second mistake in the final corner, which speaks volumes about just how much raw pace McLaren unlocked through the weekend. The team worked hard on improving low-speed corner performance, and it clearly paid dividends.
