Antonelli Bounces Back From Spin to Lead FP1 at Zandvoort

Kimi Antonelli showed why he's leading the drivers' championship by topping Free Practice 1 at Zandvoort, despite a heart-stopping moment midway through the session. The Mercedes driver posted a 1m 12.949s to beat Lando Norris and George Russell by just a tenth of a second each, with F1 back in action following the summer break. It was a proper battle between the top teams, with Ferrari also showing serious pace and rain threatening to fall as the chequered flag dropped.

The session started pretty chaotic, to be honest. The track was damp from overnight weather, so everyone ventured out on intermediates at the start before quickly switching to slicks as the circuit dried out. Times tumbled rapidly once the track came to life, and it didn't take long for the usual suspects to start trading fastest laps. Russell went quickest early on before Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton took turns at the sharp end, with Leclerc's 1m 14.146s looking solid until the final push.
Then came Antonelli's moment. The Italian lost the back end on the exit of Turn 10, spinning out and shouting over the radio that he had no idea what happened. Scary stuff when grip levels are still tricky, but he recovered without damage and got back to work. When it mattered most, Antonelli nailed it in the closing minutes on the soft tyres, posting his winning time as the weather started closing in.

The rest of the grid told an interesting story too. Oscar Piastri rounded out the top six for McLaren, while Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto flew the Audi flag in seventh and ninth. Max Verstappen, fighting for his home crowd back on familiar tarmac, only managed eleventh after a small excursion of his own. Carlos Sainz had a genuinely rough session, running wide and into the gravel twice before picking up floor damage that left him dead last when the dust settled.

With only this single hour of practice before Sprint Qualifying later on Friday, teams had to make every lap count gathering data on upgrades and setup changes. Mercedes looks sharp with both cars near the front, but Ferrari's pace suggests this could be properly competitive. Antonelli's commanding presence at the top after shaking off that spin will give him confidence, though Norris is right there and everyone knows Zandvoort can produce mad racing.
