Russell Claims Sprint Pole at Zandvoort as Mercedes Dominates Dutch GP Qualifying

George Russell has locked down pole position for the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix sprint race at Zandvoort, putting his Mercedes ahead of the field in a tense qualifying session. The British driver edged out McLaren's Lando Norris to claim the top spot on the grid, with the pair heading the 24-lap sprint that'll kick off Saturday's action. It's another strong showing for Russell as Mercedes continues to flex its muscles heading into the closing stages of the season.

Behind the front row, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will launch from third with McLaren's Oscar Piastri alongside him on row two. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli lines up fifth in his Mercedes, while home favourite Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing takes sixth on the grid. That's a solid start for the Dutchman, though he'll be hoping to make up ground during the sprint itself.

Things didn't go to plan for everyone though. Lewis Hamilton had a shocker in sprint qualifying, managing only seventh in his Ferrari as the team struggles to find the pace they need. Further back, Pierre Gasly, Gabriel Bortoleto and Arvid Lindblad round out the top ten, while Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin lines up last after the team had to contend with rear wing issues during the session. The newly upgraded AMR is carrying a tech deficit heading into the sprint.

Weather could play a massive role when the sprint gets underway on Saturday morning at 11pm UK time, with rain forecast to potentially hit Zandvoort throughout the session. That could shake things up nicely and give teams without Friday's pace a genuine chance to make an impact. One thing's for sure, Russell's pole gives Mercedes the perfect platform to start their weekend off right.
