Verstappen Storms to First Win of 2026 in Chaotic Rain-Soaked Bahrain GP

Max Verstappen finally broke through for Red Bull this season, taking victory in a dramatic, rain-delayed Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang in Malaysia. It was quite the spectacle, too, with heavy downpours forcing delays before the race even got going, then providing all sorts of tactical chaos once the lights went out. Verstappen started from pole but got mugged at Turn 1, dropping behind Mercedes pair Kimi Antonelli and George Russell as all three pilots navigated the tricky intermediate tyre conditions. The Red Bull driver didn't panic though, working his way back through when a Safety Car bunched things up and making smart calls on the tyre strategy that would ultimately seal the deal.

The intermediate to slick tyre crossover was the key moment of the race. Verstappen controlled things beautifully after regaining the lead, pulling clear of Antonelli and Russell, who were battling hard for second spot. That Safety Car window allowed those running on inters to switch to slicks without losing positions, while the drivers who'd started on slicks got absolutely caught out early on. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc both launched from the grid on slick tyres and dropped toward the back as a result, but both mounted impressive comebacks to grab points and keep their respective teams in the fight.

The real drama came right at the end when George Russell, who'd been holding onto a podium spot, suddenly ground to a halt on the start/finish straight behind the final Safety Car. His retirement was absolutely brutal for his title hopes, already paper-thin, while it handed Antonelli an extra three-point advantage in the championship fight. Kimi Antonelli took second place and further extended his lead, while Hamilton's charge saw him finish third ahead of Charles Leclerc in fourth for Ferrari. Oscar Piastri claimed sixth, though Lando Norris had a shocker when he lost it behind the Safety Car and ended up in the gravel, finishing ninth.

It was the kind of chaotic race that shows why you've got to stay focused for the entire distance, especially when Mother Nature gets involved. Verstappen's breakthrough first win of the season gives Red Bull some serious momentum heading into the second half of 2026, and it proves they've still got the pace to compete with Mercedes and Ferrari when everything comes together. As for Russell, that retirement's going to sting for weeks.
